Welcome to

St George the Martyr

We are a vibrant, world-diverse church, with a rich history dating back to at least 1122. Generations have prayed and ministered within our changing neighbourhood throughout the past 900 years.

Our iconic building stands in the heart of Borough and is a sacred place where people encounter God; and we continue to offer a place of encounter with God and neighbour; taking seriously our vocation to love God in our prioritisation of Worship, and to love our neighbour, through projects and acts of service in our neighbourhood.

This is a place rich with history; often know as Little Dorrit’s Church, this is where Charles Dickens spent his childhood, living in parish accommodation and saying his prayers in our pews. We welcome visitors from around the world to come and experience the building and neighbourhood from which he took inspiration for his writing.

“A place to be known in the heart of our city”
